Denise Crute M.D. is a neurosurgeon who works at the Illinois Neurological Institute. She is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, which is located in Rockford, Illinois. She specializes in minimally invasive neurosurgery, neurotrauma, and preventative medicine.

Dr. Crute received her undergraduate degree in Zoology from Duke University in 1983. Dr. Crute graduated cum laude from Duke University after making the Dean’s list for the previous three years. She then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, one of the most prestigious medical schools in the United States. She received her M.D. in 1988 from that venerable institution. She did her neurosurgical training at Northwestern University Hospitals.

Dr. Crute is not only involved in academic or professional pursuits, she uses her knowledge and talents for other means too. She has frequently visited Central America in order to volunteer in that region. In 2009 she helped to establish western Honduras’ first neurosurgical program through Central American Medical Outreach. Additionally, Dr. Crute is considered by many to be a superb artist and medical illustrator. Her book, published in 2009, is called Heart of a Lion, Hands of a Woman, What Women Neurosurgeons Do, and features some of her most recently published work. The subtitle for the book is “Creativity in Honor of the 20th Anniversary of Women in Neurosurgery”.
